6/2020
Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to the last edition of the Newsletter of the Krzyżowa Foundation this year. It is an exceptional edition, devoted to one very important topic for us - ecology. We want to tell you about our approach to ecological issues - about how we see our role in taking care of the surrounding world and about what we do and plan to do in this field.

In this issue we show the potential of Krzyżowa as a space for environmental education, but also as a place that implements nature-friendly solutions. You will find here a description of Krzyżowa's unique nature. However, this is not only an admiration for the beauty of nature, but above all a recognition of the educational potential of this unique place.

We invite you to get acquainted with our already implemented projects on ecological issues, which have resulted in educational materials - whether in the form of publications or Internet platforms. We also write about the initiatives that we have just launched, the implementation of which is very important for Krzyżowa as a place of environmental education. We also showcase the solutions we have managed to implement to make this place a nature-friendly place.

Although the situation in which we all find ourselves this year may be pessimistic, we want to say goodbye to 2020 looking for hope. The crisis is an opportunity for change, an opportunity to look at the world from a different perspective and to reassess priorities. We want to be active in building the future and we want to shape the reality around us wisely. We invite you to accompany us on this path.

KRZYŻOWA FORUM

Our vision of ecology in Krzyżowa || Anna Dańkowska, Robert Żurek

How should the Krzyżowa Foundation behave in the face of the climate crisis, environmental degradation and deepening social and environmental problems? We believe that it has a duty to ask courageous questions, to criticise the exploitation of the planet and people, to seek constructive solutions for a better future, and to support attitudes of respect for nature, Earth's resources and solidarity with others.

The Foundation, which runs a large educational centre and hosts more than 10,000 people from many countries every year, has considerable possibilities for pro-ecological activities. At the same time, it is statutorily obliged to do so. The Statute recommends the implementation of tasks for, among others, "ecology and animal protection and protection of natural heritage". In addition, it defines as an objective of the Foundation "to stimulate and support activities aimed at the consolidation of a peaceful and tolerant coexistence of nations, social groups and individuals", while the climate crisis and environmental degradation are increasingly a threat to peace.

(...) Action for sustainable development is not easy for a non-governmental organisation with huge needs and limited resources. That is why the Foundation sets itself ambitious goals, but achievable in the reality of its operation. We want to further develop our environmental activities, despite all the difficulties that such an undertaking brings with it. We believe that the commitment to a fairer, more sustainable and greener world is essential today and is an expression of our Foundation's responsibility for a good future for us all.

The climate crisis - what can we do? || Anna Dańkowska

The climate crisis and environmental degradation are among the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. The paradigm of economic growth at all costs, the spirit of consumerism, the attitude of greed and exploitation which man has applied to the Earth and its resources, as well as to the weaker ones, has led to ecological imbalances, environmental degradation, social inequality and climate change.

The activities of non-governmental organisations, a strong civil society, and local, cross-sectoral and international cooperation are essential for developing the values of sustainable development, democracy and solidarity in societies.

The voice of young people is increasingly strong, and they are expressing their resistance to the exploitation of the Earth and people by participating in mass climate strikes around the world. Young people realise that it is their generation and future generations who will pay the highest price for an approach in which continuous economic growth, excessive consumption and ruthless competition are identified with development. The international climate movement Fridays for Future shows that young people are ready for change and demands it from decision makers.

In this context, the role of environmental education, for sustainable development, global and transformative learning is invaluable for strengthening civic attitudes and commitment to social and environmental transformation. Such education operates on the basis of several steps: from knowledge, through deepening awareness, activating emotions, to involvement in a given matter. Asking important questions, creating a space for discussion and in-depth reflection on ecological and climatic challenges, emotional involvement, leads to specific undertakings preventing environmental threats. Showing alternatives inspires to take the initiative.

IN THIS ISSUE

Nature around

The surroundings of Krzyżowa are very diverse in terms of habitat. Within 1 km from the palace you can find: arable fields, unmowed meadows, a pond with eutrophic water and overgrown banks, a trench with reed rushes, a young deciduous forest, an ancient oak alley, a feral fruit orchard, numerous solitary trees and mid-field trees, home gardens, extensive mowed lawns. The mosaic of habitats has a very positive impact on the diversity of plant and animal species.

These diverse ecosystems invite you to discover and explore them. At the Krzyżowa Foundation we appreciate this natural wealth and want to share it with our guests and participants. . We hope that nature education will encourage everyone to protect nature and to burden it as little as possible. Welcome to the Green Krzyżowa!

Ecological boards in Krzyżowa

As part of the development of nature education we have developed notice boards presenting selected topics related to the natural surroundings of Krzyżowa. We want to encourage our guests to discover nature, so the boards will stand in various picturesque places in the area.

Walking around Krzyżowa you will be able to find out how unusual living organisms are trees, especially the old ones - on the example of our Oak Avenue. On the next board, we will touch upon a subject that is not associated with anything unusual or wonderful, because it simply describes weeds. However, after reading it you can understand that they also play an important role in the ecosystem.

The last board is a place where we present the winged inhabitants of Krzyżowa - fourteen bird species that can be found here. We describe their habits, feeding places and characteristics.

Garden in Krzyżowa

At the Krzyżowa Foundation, we focus on education through experience and try to show good practices that can inspire change for the better. This thought also guided us in developing the concept of an ecological educational garden. We were all the more pleased to hear from the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt in the spring of 2020 that our educational project 'Food - with tradition into modernity' will receive funding and that we will be able to extend our sustainable food education offer with such a graceful and useful space as the garden.

The garden is planned to have a herbarium, a vegetable garden and a picturesque corner under the oaks, which is planned to provide respite, even on hot days. The Green Classroom, a roofed place in the vicinity of the growing area, will allow to relax after common activities by the patches and to work with groups on topics related to sustainable food. The architectural design is created in the Tecla Design Office, and thanks to permaculture design workshops conducted by the Plastformers Foundation, our employees and guests could participate in this process.

Educational materials

Non-formal education is the main activity of the Foundation. Much of it is related to ecology, nature, land, globalisation, climate, sustainable development, post-growth, social and environmental transformation or sustainable food. We work with other organisations that specialise in this field, we test and adapt their materials to the needs of our target groups. The Foundation regularly develops its own environmental education materials in various projects - in international and local partnerships and sometimes independently.
We have collected educational materials created by us (and sometimes by our partners), which are available online for free.

This library is constantly being updated, so we encourage you to visit it. We hope that the materials presented will become an inspiration for educational work with children, young people, but also adults. We will be grateful for your feedback on our mail: mdsm@krzyzowa.org.pl.

Eco-solutions

At Krzyżowa we value credibility, which is why we try not only to provide environmental education, but also to implement it.

In the facility we have been running for years, we have been introducing smaller and bigger changes in a more "green" direction. Applying them brings us a lot of satisfaction, although it can also be quite a challenge. It is often associated with labor- and time-consuming additional tasks, higher costs, more difficult logistics, and very different reactions of guests.

We want the very use of the Krzyżowa space to provide an opportunity to learn and test various ways to reduce the ecological footprint in everyday life.

In the presented collages we present selected pro-ecological solutions that can be learned and experienced in different places in Krzyżowa. In this way, we also want to encourage our guests to adopt pro-ecological attitudes
