From September 22–24, Warsaw is hosting the 3rd Congress of Researchers of the History of Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine, held under the theme:
“A New Image of Our Neighbours – A New Language, New Narratives, and New Education about the Past, Present, and Future.”

The main focus of the congress is the launch of work on a future Polish-Ukrainian history textbook, developed based on the experience gained during the creation of the joint Polish-German history textbook.

As the organizers emphasize in their official invitation:

“With the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, and later the full-scale war launched by Russia against Ukraine in 2022, it has become evident that the historical knowledge taught in schools—especially in EU countries—regarding the history of Ukraine and other Central and Eastern European states—shows significant gaps.”

Therefore, in contemporary Europe, it is crucial to engage in an open dialogue about history in order to eliminate existing gaps in knowledge and to connect rather than divide.

This is the aim of the initiative to create a transnational Polish-Ukrainian history textbook for schools, drawing on experiences from a similar Polish-German project, which resulted in the publication of a four-volume textbook series titled Europa. Nasza historia / Europa – Unsere Geschichte.

As part of the congress, on September 22, a panel titled “History Education in Schools: Towards a Joint Polish-Ukrainian History Textbook” is scheduled, while on September 23–24, a workshop “Poland and Ukraine in a Shared Europe: On the Way to a Polish-Ukrainian Textbook” will be held with teachers and history educators.

The Krzyżowa Foundation will be represented at the congress and in the work on the Polish-Ukrainian textbook by Dr. Tomasz Skonieczny. He will also participate in the aforementioned panel discussion and workshops.
