On 5 February, Safer Internet Day, a European initiative under the European Union's CEF Telecom programme to raise awareness of internet safety, took place and we were participate!

The digitisation of our society continues to progress. Social media, the virtual space in the context of digitisation, play a major role in the lives of young people and increasingly also in the context of exchanges. Kreisau/Krzyżowa, a place where many young people experience an exchange project every year, makes it particularly clear that the use of social media offers is of great importance in the everyday life of the participants and that this is particularly routine and ritualised. The media networking among each other is a logical consequence of the participants after an exchange. The phenomenon permeates the world of young people regardless of their origin and is characterised by its transnational character.

The social media, however, show not only the manifold opportunities, but also the new digital challenges, above all those surrounding hate crime and cyberbullying.

The Krzyżowa Foundation organised the day together with young people from Germany and Poland. On 5 February, a workshop took place in Krzyżowa/Kreisau , as a place where past, present and future meet, as part of Safer Internet Day. The workshop discussed a change in values in virtual space and asked the question of how civil courage can be realised on the Internet. The workshop contributed to the development of an ethical media competence and to deal with the central question of digital participation. The motto was "empower, not protect".

The basis for this workshop at this historic place was the dialogue, which is based on four foundations: Courage, Europe, Future and Memory.

The afternoon of 5 February was filled with workshops: At the beginning, the young people reflected which media they use in everyday life, for which purposes. In the second step, they have exchanged ideas with their partner pupils and discovered similarities and differences. After the process of becoming aware of the challenges in the virtual space, they deal with the question of how to imagine a safe and fair internet for themselves. The young people rounded off the day with a creative "happening" and they left their personal message for a fair Internet there.
